A proper study of the New Testament world includes much more than an investigation of the writings that constitute the canonical New Testament. In order to evaluate these documents critically, we must consider the development of nascent Christianity as it interacted with the various cultures and contemporaneous religions that existed in the Mediterranean Region. Such a study necessarily includes covering the vast political and social structure of the Roman Empire.

The Roman Emperor Hadrian originally had this building constructed to serve as his mausoleum. It is now known as Castel St. Angelo.
